Apple Bread

Warm, moist apple bread fresh from the oven is a treat any time! If you're looking for a great back-to-school gift for a teacher, this is it! What could be more traditional than an apple-inspired gift? After we finished off our loaf, my 9-year-old told me I should make it again. It was definitely a hit! This bread will score big points with them, too! Make sure to make a double batch so you can have a loaf.

This recipe has been adapted from the Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book, copyright 1989. I got this recipe book for my wedding almost 20 years ago, and I have loved it.

Apple Bread Heaven is Smiling Above

Apple Bread

3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
2 cups finely chopped sweet apples (mine were the Jonathan variety)
1/2 cup (one stick) butter, melted
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon finely shredded lemon peel

Apple Bread Sliced Heaven is Smiling Above

1. Heat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease two 9 x 5 inch loaf pans.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Gradually add the apples, butter, eggs, and lemon peel. Mix just until combined.
3. Pour batter into your loaf pans. Bake for 55-65 minutes. They are done when a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
4. Cool in the pans on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove the bread from the pans and cool thoroughly on a wire rack. (Or so they say. I like my bread warm!)
5. Slice and enjoy. The bread does slice better when it is completely cool, but where's the fun in that?

  4. This looks delicious! Have you tried adding anything (chocolate, nuts, etc.) or is it just perfect with the apples alone?
One of the last bread recipes I found on Pinterest and tried went way overboard trying to stuff things it (Blueberry Banana Chocolate)...it looked great...but was a mess taste wise. I'm always testing new recipes for my website.

    1. I haven't tried adding anything, but if I did it would be nuts. I don't think chocolate would add anything good to it - and I LOVE chocolate. Please test it out and let me know how it goes. I think it's perfect as is! Thanks for stopping by.
